After Truman's second term was up, he and Bess moved back to Independence, Missouri. Truman spent a lot of time creating the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence. In his library, he met with scholars learning about his presidency and talked to school groups who visited his library. He also wrote two memoirs about his life that were best sellers. He had two favorite activities, taking walks around Independence and inviting guests over who went through town. He lived 19 years after his presidency. Harry S Truman died on December 26, 1972 of old age. His funeral was in his library and he was buried their as well.
