He had many jobs before he became president including
mailman,construction worker, and banker. After trying all this jobs he joined the National guard for 6 years. He saw his father neede help so he worked on the family farm. His father died in 1914. After this he went into the army and worked himself up to captain. In 1918 his regiment was sent to France. His group helped fight in the Vosges Mountains and in the Argonnes camp. He was know for being a very good leader. He was able to lead men in the most dire of circumstances which in return lead to the respect of his men. On June 18,1919 he married his childhood friend Bess Wallace. 4 years later they had their 1st and only child Mary Margaret. In 1919 he and his friend opened a Habardashery. It closed after a few months because of the economic down fall. In 1922 Thomas Pendergast told him to run for a position as a Judgeship in the eastern section of Jackson County. He won that and every other election except in the 1924 election. Harry was a judgeship until 1934. Then he asked Pendergast to help him run to be a representative. He ended up running for senate and winning. He became know as an Allie of the Roosevelts. The best thing he did in the senate was help the government to stop wasting money in ww2. In 1944 Roosevelt needed a new Vice President and choose Truman. Just 81 days in Truman was sent to the Whitehouse unexpected. He learned then that he would be the next president of the United States. |
